Reactions to prejudice in sports

The U.S. media has been flooded in recent days with reports about the outrageous behavior of Donald Sterling and the appropriately strong response from the NBA.  Here is an international sports story to round out the news:

When some prejudiced individual recently threw a banana on the pitch in front of Barcelona's player Dani Alves, who is Brazilian, the soccer world united (with some humor) in support of him and his calm reaction. He took a big old bite of the banana they threw at him and kept playing, so pictures started flooding the internet with other players and supporters posing with bananas, eating bananas, etc.

The incident:

There is simply no room for prejudice in sports (or anywhere in modern society for that matter).

I'm looking forward to a World Cup this summer that brings people together from all over the world to set aside their differences for a few glorious weeks of futbol, to compete fairly and display their finest skills and character, both on and off the field.

thanks, Ingrid
