How to Teach Racial Tolerance to Young Children
Related Searches:We live in an ever-changing world, rich with various cultures and races. Instructions
- 1Be a good example for children. This is the most important step, the one that will speak louder than anything you might say to them. Many behaviors are learned, after all. In matters of tolerance, you must always practice what you preach if you want the lesson to stick.
- 2Expose children to diverse races and cultures at an early age. The more children are around races that are different from their own, the more likely they are to readily accept them as a part of their environment.
- 3Teach your child the meaning of equality. Tell them often that, although we are all different colors, nationalities, etc., we are all human beings that deserve the same amount of respect and kindness. It is as simple as the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you would like to be treated.
- 4Be open about the concept of prejudice. Pretending it does not exist is impractical. Prejudice holds less power when children have knowledge of its negativity.
- 5Be a good listener. Children are naturally curious, and will undoubtedly have questions about people that are different from them. Be ready with positive and realistic answers to give them better understanding of the world around them.
